Too Many Books

I started this blog for information for me as I was sick and tired of looking through all the web sites, all my books and all the information I have downloaded over the years.  I have at the moment a stack of books sitting on my kitchen table that is about 3 feet tall.  It is a wonder the table is still standing.  Last year I bought a cookbook program to put all of my recipes into.  The goal was to turn the many books into a few.  I have stall on that for the moment, life got in the way.

I am getting very frustrated yet again at finding the information that I want, in one place in a manner that is easy for me to read.  So yet again, I think I will try to start putting all of the information into book form to be able to print off & bind.

I have started a spreadsheet for the food value of different beans to eat which ones I should plant.  With limited room, it only makes sense to plant the ones that are the healthiest.

Updates on goals, life and leathers

I took a bit of time in the last few weeks to start going over what is really important to me.  I guess since Feb 14th would have been mom’s birthday and it is the first one without her, it effected me in ways that I had not considered.  Going through her house trying to decide what to keep and what is to go is part of the cause as well.

Turning Jam into Leather update – it worked really well.  I did the leather in strips about 1 inch wide by 10 inches long and adding 2 layers.  I waited until the 1st layer was almost done and then added the 2nd layer.  This gave me the thickness that I wanted.  The lovely “side effect” I guess you can call it, is that it almost turns into taffy when you eat it.

I have now started a bath of “mixed jam” leather using 22 jars of jam (peach, peach with chocolate, pear, cinnamon pear, apricot) , 1 jar of dried blueberries, 1 jar of dried kiwi and 1 jar of baking banana chips.   I had to chance up how I did this one a bit as I did not want the seeds from the kiwi or blueberries.  I added more water to re-hydrate the dried fruit, put it through the blender and then pressed it through a jelly bag.  That way I still got the pulp but not the seeds.  It is a rather ugly purple leather.  I have set aside another 22 jars of jam to do next.

Goals  I haven’t managed to get much off my goals list.  I have made another 2 afghans, 1 of which was a barter item.  A 3rd afghan is almost complete.   I finally crocheted with cotton new coasters & hot plate holders.   I also crocheted 8 scarves to give away.

I have spent about 16 hours working on mom’s house.  Then there are the hours spent at home recycling all the old food and scrubbing all the gourds.  I lost count on the number of gourds that I cleaned but I had brought home 5 green garbage bags of gourds to clean.  Each one had to be soaked with a hot, wet towel for at least 12 hours before starting to scrub them.

Alpacas, the couple that lost their barn I will be helping them with the building of a new barn.  At the moment most of their alpacas are being boarded at 3 different farms.  Nancy, the owner said that she hopes the foundation can be in by the end of March.   It has been years since I went/helped at an old fashioned barn raising.

Alpaca course  I have yet to find anyone that will go with me and there is no way that I will go by myself.  However I have had 3 different offers from alpaca farmers to mentor me.  🙂

Social Goals:  I did have plans to meet with several people for lunch but that fell through.  I have been making more plans and chatting more on the phone.  I can’t wait to see my phone bill.

Me:  I have been eating better and I believe part of that is due to the not spending more then $25.00 a month on food.  I have reduced my coffee by half and replaced it with either green tea or herbal teas.   It sounds kind of silly but I got my first hair cut in years – from long (down to the middle of my back) to short (she took a razor to the back of my head).  I used money that my step-mom gave me for Christmas to buy my first really good winter boots and really good leather shoe/boots.

Garden:  I have ordered and received most of the seeds that I want this year.  I also went out and bought some small fencing for the front garden in hopes that it will stop the postman from walking through it and killing all my plants.  Hopefully by the end of today, I will have a large tank set up as a mini indoor greenhouse to start some of the seeds.  This way the cats will not be getting into them.

Fruit Poop Freezer Goal

Since I always run out time in the summer to process everything, some of my fruit ends up in my freezer to be processed at a later date.  I often have the time to partially prep the fruit before it goes in the freezer.  For me, partially prepped means that I have at the very least run the fruit through my food mill.

I end up with what looks like apple sauce no matter what the fruit is.  I call it my fruit poop.  Yah, not a nice name but I know it means no seeds or skin.  Often with things like strawberries, I also push the berries through a jelly bag so I still have the pulp but not the seeds.  I then put the fruit poop in either bags or tubs in my freezer to be turned into either jam/fruit spread or fruit leather.

This week I have started with the peaches that I froze this summer, turning them into peach leather.  When finished, I will have two 1.9 litre jars of leather.  Next will be using the blackberry apple mix that I have in the freezer.  Some will be fruit spread, the rest leather.

I haven’t been able to reach the bottom of my freezer for a while now but I think I also have a few tubs of yellow plum, cranberries and strawberries.  My goal is to have all of the fruit poop in the freezer turned into leather or fruit spread by the end of the month.  Wish me luck 🙂

Weekly goal review

Since I did the post Goals 2014 and the post Getting Goals Done, I figured the best way for me to track how I was doing was to post a weekly update on what I had done.  Which after looking at the list doesn’t seem like I managed enough.

  • finished 1 afghan
  • 1/3 way through another afghan
  • move the knitting machines that are in the front hall to the 3rd floor – 4 trips
  • move the milk can that is in the front hall to the 3rd floor – 1 trip
  • move the rest of the stuff except the coat rack to the basement – 2 trips
  • vacuum the front hall
  • vacuum the stairs
  • cleaned 8 gourds & found a place to store them
  • did a thorough cleaning of the worm & bug boxes, and started a daily routine of sorting the pupa
  • vacuumed & scrubbed the living room floor
  • started to log my day noting all meals, things done & how I was feeling
  • saw the doctor for the first of the test results
  • filled on what felt like tons of paperwork for the insurance companies
  • started altering my clothes to fit

Getting “Goals” Done

When going through rehab for going back to work, I was given a work book to complete.  I discovered that day that my “goals” are actually a wish list of things I would like to do rather then an actual goals list.  For example:  I want to get rid of the large bed in the front bedroom.  That to me sounds like a goal.  The councilor said nope, that is a wish until I take the time to write down the steps that it would take to get the job done.

wish list – get rid of large bed in the front bedroom

goal – get rid of large bad in the front bedroom by taking the following steps:

  • move the knitting machines that are in the front hall to the 3rd floor – 4 trips
  • move the milk can that is in the front hall to the 3rd floor – 1 trip
  • move the rest of the stuff except the coat rack to the basement – 2 trips
  • vacuum the front hall
  • vacuum the stairs
  • vacuum the upper hall
  • vacuum the bathroom
  • vacuum the front bedroom
  • wash the front hall floor
  • wash the upper hall floor
  • wash the bedroom floor
  • strip the bed
  • wash the bedding – 4 loads
  • take apart the bed
  • drag the mattress downstairs
  • carry the box spring downstairs – 2 trips
  • carry the bed frame downstairs – 3 trips
  • call to have someone come take the bed
  • wait until someone can come get it
  • help them load it into the truck

Because of all of the steps involved in something as simple as getting rid of a bed, it is hard for me to achieve my “wish list”.  I get overwhelming by the amount of work it takes to get something this small done.  The idea behind the “goals list” is so that I can work on 1 thing for 15 minutes and stop if I need to.

So I am going to listen to the rehab person and rewrite my “goals list” with the steps included.  Things should get done faster with less stress if I only think of it in 15 minute time frames.

Goals 2014

Ok so here goes, I am putting it out there for the world to see.  This is just the “wish list”.  I will add the steps later as a page rather then a post.  Hopefully I will be able to update weekly so I know that I am on track for completing my goals.

and so begins a new year

A time to reflex on last years achievements and events.  It is not a time to think “I could have, I should have”.  I must keep remembering what I did, not what I didn’t do.  So here is a short list of what I did manage to do:

  • managed to get back to work, although it wasn’t for long
  • got the dam shrubs out of the front “garden”
  • got an herb garden planted
  • built 2 raised veggie beds
  • crocheted a ton
  • gifted or got rid of about 5 van fulls of stuff

  • started the road to healing, I hope
  • did a lot of work on the wood trim, although I am sure I am the only person that can tell
  • looked after mom the best I could

Snowy day plans or a me day

It has been years since I have had to leave the house when it snows.  I was hoping today to make it out for an oil change, a few groceries and a art show before the snow came.  I guess the weather people got the timing wrong.   A few of the things that I have been putting off due to the house still be renovated is my sewing/building/creating.  So while laying in bed last night waiting for the sandman to come, my mind started to wander about “crafts” for the first time since my mom got sick, over 3 years ago.

a draft stopper

This one is shown on Amazon but it is unavailable.  I doubt I will go that fancy but it is a fun one.

a cat condo

This one is from Playtimeworkshop.  It is close to what I want to make.  I really just want a bench with a lid, a small storage place on top with a cat condo under.  Something that looks fancy but it is a nice warm place for the cats to sleep.

Random Index – Goals, Wishes, Dreams

The random index is for those things that I would like to learn, practice, buy or do.  I have found that putting all of that on paper seems to overwhelm me or I loose the paper or I just don’t know where to start.  So as I think of things that I would like to get done, I will add them to the index to be organized or added to later.
